What is the recommended diet for a horse on herbal medicine?
Healthy horse diet NOs:
No GMO, No Soy (it interferes with your horse’s hormones, you do not want that!), No chemical preservatives
Health horse diet YESes:
Natural Grains – Hay, Grass, Oats (whole for horses in general, hulled for the young ones and equine senior citizens), Barley (it supports muscle tone among other things) and Corn (a good vibrant yellow non GMO type).
Horses really do not need grain unless their digestion is compromised, they have extremely low energy and vitality, or are doing substantial work. Older horses in winter may need grain supplementation combined with rugging which conserves body heat and energy so the horse won’t need to eat to keep warm.
Check that your horses have sufficient fiber to maintain a healthy balanced digestive tract. Meadow hay (grassy hay, pasture hay) does a good job, while Lucerne hay is required only when the horse is on the lean side and could do with a little gain in fat.
Planting herbs around where horses can munch on them at will is a great idea, as is a divided tray somewhere indoors with dried herbs for them to pick at if they feel like it.
